Terminology<\/span><\/strong><\/span>
\nIn the manufacture of hinges, particularly special or “specialty” hinges, a variety of terms are used to describe and dimension the required hinge structure. These terms are not generally understood and therefore, will attempt to describe different terms and where necessary illustrate them. As there is no<\/span> standard of hinge terms that has been accepted by the entire industry, we will present those that are in current use.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

How to Specify<\/span><\/strong><\/span>
\nWhen requesting prices and\/or ordering special hinges, as much complete dimensional information is necessary for us to accurately respond to your request. We’ve provided an illustration to indicate the various dimensions we will require as well as a guide to materials, sizes, types and features of the finished hinge.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>

A. QUANTITY<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

We will fill an order for any quantity, whether for pilot or production runs.\u00a0 Price based on quantity required.<\/span><\/p>\n

B. GAUGES (Thickness)<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Steel to .500<\/span><\/p>\n

Stainless to .375<\/span><\/p>\n

Aluminum to .250<\/span><\/p>\n

Brass to .250<\/span><\/p>\n

Titanium to .187<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

C. WIDTH<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Usually expressed in terms of when the hinge is fully open, with widths available up to 32\" for each leaf.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

D. UNEQUAL LEAVES<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Leaves of unequal length or width are measured from the center of the barrel of the hinge curl.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

E. LENGTH<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Generally up to 120\".\u00a0 In some gauges up to 18'.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

F. TYPE OF LEAF MATERIAL<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Steel:\u00a0 Soft, quarter hard, half hard.\u00a0 Cold and hot rolled grades. (Pickled and oiled)<\/span><\/p>\n

Stainless:\u00a0 Types 302, 304, 316, 321, 430 in 2B finish.\u00a0 Other types and finishes available to order<\/span><\/p>\n

Aluminum:\u00a0 Soft, quarter hard, half hard.\u00a0 5052 and available in 3003<\/span><\/p>\n

Brass:\u00a0 Soft, quarter hard, half hard.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Note:\u00a0 Unless otherwise specified, hinge material will be furnished as follows:<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Steel:\u00a0 CRS or HRPO in 1010 series (mild)<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Stainless: Commercial<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Aluminum: Half hard<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Other materials such as zinc, copper, bronze, titanium, etc. are available providing materials are sufficiently ductile to allow forming of the hinge curl.<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Certification of Compliance and\/or Material Test Reports are available<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

G. DIAMETER OF PIN<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

.035 to 1-1\/2 dia. in all solid round gauge ranges.<\/span><\/p>\n

H. TYPE OF PIN MATERIAL<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Steel, Stainless, Aluminum, Brass and Nylon.\u00a0 Tubing also available.<\/span><\/p>\n

Steel:\u00a0 Wire or bar (depending on gauge) 1010 - 1020<\/span><\/p>\n

Stainless:\u00a0 Types 303, 304, 316, 416<\/span><\/p>\n

Aluminum alloy;\u00a0 Tempered 2017-T4<\/span><\/p>\n

Brass:\u00a0 Half hard<\/span><\/p>\n

I. TYPE OF ASSEMBLY<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Various methods of pin retention available including:\u00a0 flush, spun, loose, brazed or welded, swaged, formed, tapered drive pin, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

J. SIZE OF HOLES<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Typically, stock hinges are manufactured without holes; the application of the product being made by spot or tack welding or drilling holes at assembly.\u00a0 Standard hole punches include:<\/span><\/p>\n

Square:\u00a0 .172 - .437<\/span><\/p>\n

Oblong: .140 x .187 - .750 x 1.000<\/span><\/p>\n

Round:\u00a0 .098 - 1.375 dia<\/span><\/p>\n

Rectangular:\u00a0 .218 x .875 - .375 x .750<\/span><\/p>\n

Holes may be punched in material of gauges up to .375 thick, within tooling limitations.\u00a0 Other configurations available.<\/span><\/p>\n

K. HOLE LOCATIONS<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Standard hole centers, straight-line or staggered, are 2\", 3\", 4\", 5\" and 6\".\u00a0 Other spacings available at extra charge.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

L. COUNTERSUNK HOLES<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

If a screw or rivet needs to be countersunk please specify: cut, depressed or embossed<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

M. FINISHES<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Standard hinges are provided unfinished unless specified, but there are unlimited plating and polishing finishes available and only limited to design, size and end use.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

N. SWAGGING\/OFFSETTING<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Various forms of altering the hinge leaves to meet the needs of the application are available.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

O. JOINT OR KNUCKLE LENGTH<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Also referred to as knuckle, loop, node or curl, denotes the part of the hinge which forms the sections through which a pin passes.\u00a0 This and the notch make up the hinge length.\u00a0 Usually the joints in lighter gauge hinges are of shorter length.<\/span><\/p>\n

P. PAINT CLEARANCE<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Hinges manufactured for industrial applications are generally provided with allowances for paint or plating clearance at the width of the joint and depth of the notch.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Q. HINGE ASSEMBLY<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Unless otherwise indicated, a surface type hinge will be provided.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

R. NOTCHING OR TRIMMING<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The notching or trimming of one or both ends of a hinge are available where application is necessary.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

S. WELD NUTS OR STUDS<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Are available when greater holding power is needed.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

T. HOLE TAPPING<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

We are equipped to tap holes in any type of material provided that the gauge thickness will allow for at least two (2) threads.\u00a0 Hole extrusion for a greater number of threads is also available.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

U. FILLET WELDING OF KNUCKLES<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The fillet welding of hinge knuckles is applied to hinges which are normally mounted horizontally and in service subject to severe pressures, such as tailgates on dump trucks, and where considerable weight pulls from the pin.\u00a0 Fillet welding of a few knuckles on each end is usually sufficient and greatly increase the yield strength of the hinge.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>
